NIA

Unlocking the magic of healing through movement

What is NIA?

Nia is a movement practice for adults that draws from Martial Arts, Dance Arts and Healing Arts. Nia dance cardio fitness classes are an hour and include mindful movement guidance. Class cycles include warm-up, sustained non-impact aerobic conditioning, strength training, cool down and stretching. Nia Fitness classes are taught to music, and employ 52 basic movements and techniques .

History of NIA

NIA (pronounced NEE-ah) stands for neuromuscular integrative action, and it’s one of the latest trends in mind-body fitness fusion. A unique blending of the fluidity and focus of Tai Chi and yoga, the grace and spontaneity of modern dance, and the energy and explosiveness of martial arts, NIA boosts both physical and emotional well-being, say enthusiasts around the country.

“We started thinking, ‘What are we doing to our bodies, to our students’ bodies, with all this jumping up and down?'” says NIA co-founder Debbie Rosas. “Aerobics was too myopic, too limiting, cutting out a large amount of the population that needed to be moving. We wanted to address the whole body and mind.”

And so NIA (which originally stood for non-impact aerobics) was born. Classes, which typically last an hour, are designed for all ages and fitness levels, says Bramlett, who has students ranging in age from 20-something to 88.

What our Nia Classes look like

Nia is the most advanced form of fusion fitness, blending martial arts, healing arts, dance arts and self-healing to create a high-powered, synergistic workout that will not only keep you in fantastic shape, but will also help you to rediscover the joy of movement and being at home in your body. Rich in diversity in both music and movement, Nia addresses the whole person through integration, play and sensory awareness. Nia uses the pleasure principle to seek comfort and ease in order to move, strengthen and heal the body in a natural, organic way. It is a workout that is fun, yet efficient, providing cardiovascular conditioning while inducing the feel-good sensations of dance. Nia is for anybody who needs to move.
